About the Role

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Post-Graduate Design Engineer to join our growing Civils & Structures design team in York.

This role is ideal for a recent graduate looking to begin their career in engineering design within the rail and civils infrastructure sector. You will work under the guidance of experienced design engineers, contributing to the development of technical solutions across a wide range of civil and structural projects.

You’ll gain exposure across the full design lifecycle from feasibility and early-stage concept design through to detailed design, while developing your technical capability in a supportive environment.


About the Team / Business Unit

As part of a growing in-house design capability, our Civils & Structures team delivers engineering solutions across major infrastructure and rail projects.

Typical project work includes:

  • Bridge reconstruction, refurbishment, and strengthening
  • Station infrastructure and platform upgrades
  • Structural works including bridges, footbridges, and associated assets  

You’ll join a collaborative team committed to delivering safe, efficient, and innovative engineering solutions.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of engineering designs under supervision
  • Input into technical solutions that meet programme, budget, and quality requirements
  • Support production of calculations, reports, and design outputs to industry standards
  • Contribute to the design process from concept through to detailed design
  • Assist with site visits, surveys, and data collection activities
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and stakeholders
  • Develop awareness of industry standards, codes of practice, and regulations
  • Apply Safe by Design and CDM principles in all aspects of work

About You

  • Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering (or related discipline)
  • Working towards membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., ICE, IStructE)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities
  • Willingness to learn and develop within a structured graduate programme
  • Interest in rail, infrastructure, and structural engineering projects
